About “cancer”
The word “cancer” came from the father of medicine, Hippocrates, the “Father of modern medicine”. Hippocrates used the Greek words, carcinos and carcinoma (terms used to describe a crab) to describe tumors which Hippocrates thought a tumor resembled. Although Hippocrates may have named “Cancer”, he was certainly not the first to discover the disease. The history of cancer actually begins much earlier.
The world's oldest documented case of cancer hails from ancient Egypt, in 1500 b.c. The details were recorded on a papyrus, documenting 8 cases of tumors occurring on the breast.

Cancer is a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues.
All cancers begin in cells, the body's basic unit of life. To understand cancer it is useful to understand what happens when normal cells become cancer cells.
The body is made up of many types of cells. These cells grow and divide in a controlled way to produce more cells as they are needed to keep the body healthy. When cells become old or damaged, they die and are replaced with new cells.
However, sometimes this orderly process goes wrong. The genetic material (DNA) of a cell can become damaged or changed, producing mutations that affect normal cell growth and division. When this happens, cells do not die when they should and new cells form when the body does not need them. The extra cells may form a mass of tissue called a tumour.
Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymphatic system.
Cancer is one of the most dreaded diseases in the world today, one in four deaths are due to Cancer and the latest figures given by The Cancer Council states that one in two people will suffer from some form of cancer in their lifetime.
